| KITCHENER-WATERLOO - Quebec is all alone in first place at the 2007 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, through play Monday evening at the Westmount Golf & Country Club.
Skipped by Eve Bélisle of Montreal, Quebec is also the only undefeated team, now at 5-0, through eight draws, after winning both its games on Monday…5-3 over Prince Edward Island and 9-8 over Northern Ontario.
Bélisle is seeking to become just the second female skip to win the Mixed, joining Alberta’s Shannon Kleibrink, who won the 2004 edition in Schumacher, Ontario.
A game behind, at 4-1, are Manitoba and Ontario. Manitoba, skipped by Terry McNamee of Brandon, handed Alberta its second loss of the day, 6-5 in an extra end in the afternoon session, before taking out Saskatchewan, 9-2, in the evening draw.
Defending champion Ontario, skipped by John Epping of Oakville, also won both its games, 8-5 over New Brunswick and 7-4 over British Columbia. Epping, who won last year’s Mixed in Whitehorse, is trying to become just the second skip to win consecutive Mixed titles, joining Saskatchewan’s Larry McGrath (1967-68).
Alberta and New Brunswick are next at 3-2. Skipped by Ted Appelman of Edmonton, Alberta fell from the unbeaten ranks on Monday, losing two squeakers…first to Saskatchewan, 8-7, then to Manitoba, 6-5. New Brunswick, skipped by Terry Odishaw of Moncton, split a pair, losing to Ontario before defeating British Columbia by a similar margin, 8-5.
Five teams are deadlocked at 2-3: British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northern Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. Nova Scotia is at 1-4 while the Northwest Territories/Yukon remains winless at 0-5.
Round robin play continues through Thursday, with three draws daily at 9:00 am, 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. The first place team will then advance directly to the final on Saturday at 12:30 pm ET, while the second and third place teams meet in a semi-final on Friday evening, to determine the other finalist.
Alberta and Saskatchewan have each won a leading eight Mixed titles since the championship began in Toronto in 1964. |
